SCHWANTHALER, Ludwig (b. 1802, M黱chen, d. 1848, M黱chen) Bavaria 1837-48 Bronze, height 1.800 cm Theresienwiese, Munich The colossal statue was erected in front of the classical Greek-style Hall of Fame on the Theresienh鰄e. It was meant to equate her with the goddess of Athens, just as Munich was to be the new, resurrected Athens. Radical was Schwanthaler's break with the models of Antiquity: his Bavaria, who holds an oak wreath in her raised left hand and is clothed in a bearskin, looks, with the Bavarian lion by her, utterly Germanic.
