BOTTICELLI, Sandro (b. 1445, Firenze, d. 1510, Firenze) Allegory of Abundance 1480-85 Pen, brown ink, brown wash over black chalk and pink tinted paper, 317 x 253 mm British Museum, London This study is one of the most technically practised and gentle that the artist produced. Abundance bears a cornucopia in her arm as a symbol and is accompanied by putti carrying fruit. Her posture and physiognomy are strongly reminiscent of the figures of Flora and Venus in Primavera, giving the study a date somewhere in the first half of the 1480s. The proximity to Primavera may also be seen in the treatment of her dress, which is identical with those of the three dancing Graces.
